Rawalpindi to Get Three New Underpasses in Major Traffic Decongestion Plan

To ease worsening traffic congestion along the Peshawar Road corridor, the Punjab government has greenlit construction of three new underpasses in Rawalpindi—at Race Course Park, Army Graveyard, and Chairing Cross. These projects are part of the 2025–26 Annual Development Programme (ADP), with Rs2.6 billion, Rs1.9 billion, and Rs1.5 billion allocated respectively.

According to district administration officials, PC-I for the underpasses is under preparation, with physical work expected to commence after the monsoon season. The initiative aims to make Peshawar Road a fully signal-free corridor from Kutchery to Motorway Chowk, reducing travel time significantly and enhancing connectivity between the city and New Islamabad International Airport.

In addition, the government is exploring construction of a flyover at Jinnah Park and resolving land acquisition issues at Kutchery Chowk. A broader plan also includes launching over 100 electric buses and integrating them into the future signal-free route network.

These developments mark a pivotal step in Rawalpindi’s infrastructure upgrade, offering alternative routes to major highways while alleviating pressure on existing thoroughfares like Srinagar Highway and I.J. Principal Road.
