Global Enthusiasm Marks Nintendo Switch 2 Launch as Fans Line Up Worldwide

June 5, 2025 — The much-anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 has ignited global excitement, with fans queuing outside stores in major cities to be among the first to experience the next-generation console.

In Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, successful applicants of Bic Camera’s sales lottery lined up early to collect their devices. Yumi Ohi, a 30-year-old delivery contractor from Saitama, expressed her joy, stating, “I feel like I’m going to cry,” after finally securing a console following previous unsuccessful attempts.

The Nintendo Switch 2, priced at $499.99, boasts a larger screen and enhanced graphics compared to its predecessor. It launches with titles like “Mario Kart World,” aiming to captivate both new and returning players.

Retailers across the U.S., including Best Buy, GameStop, Target, Walmart, and Costco, hosted midnight release events to accommodate the high demand. Best Buy stores opened at 12:01 AM ET for pre-order pickups and limited in-store sales, while GameStop began its launch event Wednesday afternoon, with pickups starting at midnight EST.

Despite Nintendo’s efforts to strengthen production capacity, the overwhelming demand has led to shortages. The company reported receiving 2.2 million applications for its Switch 2 sales lottery in Japan alone.

Analysts predict strong adoption rates, with Nintendo forecasting sales of 15 million Switch 2 units during the current financial year. However, concerns remain about sustaining momentum beyond the initial surge from hardcore gamers.
