Monsoon Arrives June 25, Bringing Rain Risks Nationwide

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast the first monsoon spell to hit most parts of the country from June 25 to July 1, offering much‑needed relief from the ongoing heatwave but raising flood and landslide concerns.

Moist winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are expected to converge with a strong westerly wave, triggering:

  • Moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in Punjab and Islamabad‑Rawalpindi from June 25–29.
  • Heavy rainfall and landslide risk in hilly zones like Murree, Galiyat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit‑Baltistan from June 26–July 1.
  • Urban flooding likely in low‑lying areas of major cities: Karachi, Hyderabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Peshawar .

What to Expect & Take Precautions

  • Temperatures before the rain have soared dangerously—up to 42 °C in Rawalpindi and nearly 108 °F (~42 °C) in adjoining areas.
  • Urban drains and nullahs may overflow; hilly roads face risk from debris, flush floods, and landslides .
  • Farmers should adjust sowing and harvesting plans to avoid crop damage from early downpours.
  • Tourists and local travelers are advised to avoid unstable slopes and flash‑flood prone zones, particularly district‑level hilly corridors.
  • Authorities are placing provincial disaster management teams, WASH departments, and rescue services on high alert during the June 26–29 peak.
