Gates Foundation Pledges $1.6 Billion to Gavi Vaccine Alliance for Global Immunization Efforts

June 20, 2025 – Global Health Desk: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced a landmark $1.6 billion commitment to the Gavi Vaccine Alliance, aimed at boosting child immunization rates, preventing disease outbreaks, and strengthening healthcare systems in low-income countries over the next five years.

The pledge, revealed at the Global Vaccine Summit in Paris, is one of the largest single commitments to global immunization in recent years, reaffirming the Gates Foundation’s long-standing support for equitable access to life-saving vaccines.

A Lifesaving Partnership

The Gavi Alliance, founded in 2000, has helped vaccinate over 1 billion children and is credited with preventing more than 17 million deaths globally. The new funding will support efforts to:

  • Expand vaccine coverage to reach an additional 500 million children by 2030
  • Introduce new vaccines, including for malaria, HPV, and rotavirus
  • Strengthen cold chain infrastructure and healthcare delivery in rural areas
  • Enhance pandemic preparedness in vulnerable regions

“Vaccines are one of the best investments in global health. This commitment will help save millions of lives,” said Bill Gates, co-chair of the Gates Foundation.

Focus on Low-Income Nations

The $1.6 billion fund will prioritize countries in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and conflict-affected regions, where immunization gaps are widening due to climate change, instability, and post-pandemic setbacks.

Gavi CEO Dr. Sania Nishtar, a former Pakistani health minister, said:

“This partnership ensures that no child is left behind due to where they are born. It is a moral and public health imperative.”

Pakistan Among Key Beneficiaries

Pakistan, a longstanding Gavi partner, is expected to continue receiving support for routine immunizations, polio eradication efforts, and new vaccine rollouts. Health officials have welcomed the pledge, calling it crucial for reaching zero-dose children—those who have never received a single vaccine.

Global Recognition and Response

The announcement has been welcomed by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and global health advocates, who hailed the funding as a major step toward achieving universal immunization goals outlined in WHO’s Immunization Agenda 2030.
