Islamabad – June 26, 2025: The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has stated that no final decision has been made regarding Pakistan’s participation in upcoming international hockey tournaments to be hosted by India. The uncertainty stems from pending government-level approvals, amid complex diplomatic and political considerations between the two neighboring countries.
The statement came following queries about Pakistan’s attendance at key events such as the FIH Pro League and the Asian Champions Trophy, both scheduled to be held in India later this year.
Government Approval Required
PSB officials clarified that participation in any event held in India requires clearance from Pakistan’s foreign and interior ministries, in line with standard protocol.
“The final decision will rest with the federal government,” a PSB spokesperson stated.
“The PSB, PHF, and relevant stakeholders will follow whatever directive is issued.”
Implications for Pakistan Hockey
The lack of clarity has raised concerns within the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), which has already begun preparations for international tournaments.
- Delays in confirmation could impact player training schedules
- Pakistan may lose ranking points or face fines from international hockey bodies if it withdraws late
- It could further isolate Pakistan hockey from global competitions
Regional Sports and Politics Interlinked
Sports ties between Pakistan and India remain heavily influenced by broader diplomatic tensions. While cricket has seen similar disruptions in bilateral series, hockey — once a symbol of rivalry and respect — is now also caught in geopolitical crosswinds.
India recently hosted major hockey tournaments without Pakistan’s participation, and the trend may continue unless formal sports diplomacy channels are revived.
Pakistan’s Previous Stance
Pakistan has previously declined or delayed participation in India-hosted events due to:
- Visa restrictions and security assurances
- Lack of diplomatic engagement
- Policy directives from the Foreign Office
Despite these hurdles, the Pakistan hockey team has historically enjoyed strong viewership and fan engagement in India, owing to the sport’s legacy in both countries.
