Frontier Constabulary to Become Federal Constabulary with Nationwide Jurisdiction

In a major overhaul of Pakistan’s paramilitary structure, the government has decided to transform the Frontier Constabulary (FC) into a nationwide law enforcement agency titled the “Federal Constabulary,” state broadcaster PTV reported. The move aims to strengthen the country’s internal security framework and streamline federal control over policing operations across all provinces and regions, including Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Currently headquartered in Peshawar and commanded by officers from the Police Service of Pakistan, the FC operates under federal jurisdiction but has traditionally focused on policing border regions and maintaining internal security in select areas. The planned transformation will be formalized through amendments to the Frontier Constabulary Act of 1915. Once approved by the federal cabinet, a presidential ordinance will extend its mandate nationwide.

Recruitment for the rebranded force will begin shortly, and regional offices will be established countrywide to support its expanded jurisdiction. Despite the upgrade, command will remain under senior police officials.

The proposal mirrors earlier efforts in 2018, when a similar upgrade was suggested to align FC officers’ benefits and operational capacity with other civil law enforcement institutions.

This transformation represents a significant shift in Pakistan’s internal security dynamics, positioning the Federal Constabulary as a centralized, unified law enforcement force to address national-level threats and bolster civilian policing capacities.
