IAEA Reports Iran’s Surge in Enriched Uranium Stockpile, Heightening Global Concerns

Vienna, May 31, 2025 — The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported a significant increase in Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, intensifying international apprehensions about Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. As of May 17, Iran possesses 408.6 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60% purity, marking a nearly 50% rise since February. This level of enrichment is just below the 90% threshold required for weapons-grade material.

The IAEA expressed “serious concern” over Iran’s enrichment activities, noting that Tehran is the only non-nuclear-weapon state producing uranium at this level. The agency also highlighted Iran’s insufficient cooperation in addressing questions about undeclared nuclear materials found at several sites.

Western powers, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany, are preparing to urge the IAEA Board of Governors to formally declare Iran in breach of its nuclear non-proliferation obligations during the upcoming meeting on June 9. Such a resolution could lead to the reimposition of sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but the IAEA’s findings have raised doubts about these claims. The agency’s report also revealed that Iran’s total enriched uranium stockpile has surpassed 9,200 kilograms, significantly exceeding the limits set by the 2015 agreement.
