Is dream interpretation Haram in Islam?

To start with, the short answer to the aforementioned question is, without a doubt, a sound “no.”
Considering that our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) never returned the people who turned to Him for this very purpose, saying it’s Haram would be an untrue statement.
However, it’s also essential to realize that the person deciphering the meaning behind your dreams may sometimes get it wrong.
Case in point, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) once told Abu Bakr (who used to interpret dreams for others):
“You have interpreted a part of it (dream) correctly, and you have erred in interpreting another part of it.”
Therefore, in addition to seeking dream interpretation from only those sufficiently gifted in this area, it’s wise never to rely upon it completely. Not to mention, you must keep your visions under wraps from people who might harbor evil intentions for you.
For example, remember when Hazrat Yusuf (AS) told his father - Hazrat Yaqoob (AS) - about his dream, where he saw eleven stars, all bowing towards him.
Understanding that his son was about to become a significant being in his life and the hereafter, he asked Hazrat Yusuf (AS) not to share his vision with his brothers.
The reason behind this reaction was fairly straightforward. Being well-aware of the jealous nature of his other sons, Hazrat Yaqoob (AS) thought it was better to keep the revelation a secret to stop any ill-intentioned harm initiated by them.
Similarly, it must be understood that dreams coming from Shaytan (nightmares) are not to be shared with anyone and should be kept to oneself.
As for the visions you may receive from the Almighty Allah, there’s another reason why you should only share them with an Islamic scholar who’s genuinely gifted in dream interpretation.
That is, sometimes, what you think of as a well-meaning dream turns out to be an evil vision undecipherable by a layman, and vice versa.
Lastly, it could be that when a person dreams, their visions don’t have any particular meaning behind them. It means they are merely a reflection of one’s mental or physical state.
Mostly, when dreams do have meaning hidden behind them, they are unclear and require interpretation from whom Allah (SWT) has blessed with such a talent.
All in all, you must remain wary of who you trust with interpreting your dreams and only share those visions that come to you from Allah (SWT) Himself.
