PM Shehbaz Sharif Declares Blue Economy

Islamabad, June 16, 2025 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the potential of the “blue economy” as Pakistan’s emerging economic frontier during the launch of the 2nd Pakistan International Maritime Expo and Conference (PIMEC 2025). He urged a nationwide effort to harness marine resources, transforming Pakistan into a maritime growth hub.

Addressing the ceremony, the premier praised the Pakistan Navy and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs for steering the initiative. He noted that with over 1,000 km of coastline and key ports, Pakistan is strategically positioned to tap into the trillion-dollar global marine economy.

PM Shehbaz stressed that even modest gains from marine trade—currently generating nearly $7 billion annually—could deliver substantial growth. He cited models such as Japan to illustrate how countries with limited coastline achieve maritime success through innovation and strategic investment.

Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry outlined the “Maritime at 100” vision, aiming to elevate the sector to a $100 billion economy by 2047.
