In a groundbreaking move toward smart urban planning, the Punjab government has decided to implement automated rainfall measurement systems across the province for the first time. The shift from outdated manual systems to real-time digital rain gauges aims to significantly improve accuracy, data collection speed, and disaster response.
According to Secretary Housing Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, all Water and Sanitation Agencies (WASA) in Punjab have received directives to replace manual gauges with automated ones within seven days. These devices will be strategically installed across districts to ensure effective monitoring and early warning capabilities.
The initiative follows a record-breaking 136mm rainfall event in Lahore that resulted in massive urban flooding. Authorities hope this technology will help mitigate such disasters by enabling faster, data-driven decision-making.
This transition is also part of broader reforms led by the Chief Minister, which include engaging youth and engineering interns in on-ground modernization efforts, strengthening Pakistan’s resilience to climate-induced urban challenges.
