Six-Year-Old Boy Tragically Drowns in Open Manhole in Karachi’s Jamshed Quarters

Karachi, May 29, 2025 — In a heartbreaking incident, a six-year-old boy named Ali lost his life after falling into an open manhole in Karachi’s Jamshed Quarters area on Wednesday. Ali and his 12-year-old brother, Ubaid, were returning home after selling chips when Ali fell into the uncovered manhole near a petrol pump. Despite immediate efforts, he drowned before help could arrive.

The tragedy sparked outrage among local residents, who staged a protest by placing Ali’s body on Jamshed Road, demanding accountability from municipal authorities. Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) MPA Aamir Siddiqui joined the protest, criticizing the Sindh government and Karachi mayor for failing to address the issue of open manholes.

Police have registered a manslaughter case under Section 322 of the Pakistan Penal Code against unidentified individuals, following a complaint by the victim’s maternal uncle, Mohammed Ibrahim.

This incident is not isolated; earlier this year, a six-year-old boy named Ibad also died after falling into an open manhole in Karachi’s Shah Faisal Colony. Despite previous tragedies and public outcry, the issue of uncovered manholes remains unresolved, posing a continuous threat to the city’s residents.
