Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad to Host International Cricket After 17-Year Hiatus

Faisalabad’s historic Iqbal Stadium is set to welcome international cricket back after a 17-year break, as Pakistan hosts Bangladesh for the first two T20Is of a five-match series on May 25 and 27, 2025. This marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to revive international cricket across the country.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has undertaken extensive renovations to bring the stadium up to international standards. Upgrades include refurbished broadcasting facilities, newly installed seating, modernized dressing rooms, and pitches prepared with specially sourced soil from Nandipur to ensure optimal playing conditions

Iqbal Stadium, established in 1978, has a rich history of hosting international matches, including 24 Tests and 16 ODIs. However, it last hosted an international fixture in April 2008. The upcoming T20Is signify a revival of the stadium’s international status and are part of PCB’s broader strategy to decentralize cricket and bring high-profile matches to various cities across Pakistan

The return of international cricket is expected to boost the local economy, with increased activity anticipated in hospitality, retail, and transportation sectors. Moreover, it serves as an inspiration for the youth in Faisalabad, reigniting their passion for the sport and providing them with opportunities to witness top-tier cricket firsthand

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed optimism about the stadium’s future, stating that the successful hosting of these matches could pave the way for more international fixtures, including potential Test matches and Pakistan Super League games in Faisalabad

As the cricketing world turns its eyes to Faisalabad, the city stands ready to showcase its hospitality and passion for the game, marking a new chapter in Pakistan’s cricketing journey.
