Toxic Gas Inhalation Claims Life of Labourer, Injures Two in KP’s Bajaur District

One labourer lost his life and two others were hospitalized after inhaling toxic gas inside a well in the Mamond tehsil of Bajaur district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The incident occurred while the three workers were cleaning a well in the Saidgai area, when they were reportedly overcome by harmful fumes, likely emanating from accumulated gases in the confined space.

Rescue and Medical Response

Local residents and rescue teams rushed to the scene:

  • One worker was declared dead on arrival at the District Headquarters Hospital in Khar
  • The two survivors remain in critical condition under intensive care
  • Authorities suspect hydrogen sulfide or methane exposure as the likely cause

“These gases are extremely dangerous in closed environments. Entering such spaces without protective gear is life-threatening,” a local health official said.

Occupational Safety Concerns Raised

The tragedy has sparked renewed concerns over labor safety regulations, particularly in rural and informal sectors where:

  • Protective equipment is rarely used
  • Safety inspections are minimal
  • Workers often enter hazardous sites untrained and unequipped

Activists and local residents have urged the KP government to investigate the incident and ensure that safety guidelines are enforced in such risky operations.

Administration’s Response

Local police and district authorities have launched an initial inquiry, though no FIR has been registered yet. Health officials are also conducting tests to determine the exact nature of the toxic gas involved.

The deceased has been identified, and his body handed over to the family for burial.
