A Senate committee was informed on Tuesday that between 13,000 and 15,000 Pakistani students travel to the United Kingdom each year, not just for education — but with the intention of securing permanent residence.
The startling revelation was made during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis, chaired by Senator Afnanullah Khan.
Education Route Used for Migration
Officials from the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis explained that many students leverage post-study work visas to eventually settle in the UK. The figures underscore a growing trend where education is being used as a migration pathway rather than a temporary academic pursuit.
“The numbers reflect both a brain drain and a shift in migration trends,” Senator Afnanullah observed, urging the government to offer incentives for skilled graduates to return.
Concerns Over Brain Drain
Committee members expressed concern over the loss of talent and human capital, especially in the fields of medicine, engineering, and IT.
The Senate panel called for:
- A national retention strategy for highly skilled students
- Stronger post-study engagement programs in Pakistan
- Enhanced support for overseas Pakistani students
Officials added that similar migration flows are observed for other destinations, including Canada, Australia, and Germany, but the UK remains the top choice due to relaxed post-Brexit immigration policies and established diaspora networks.
Policy Recommendations Expected
The committee has asked for a comprehensive report and policy suggestions to manage the trend while still allowing legitimate student mobility.
