Punjab Government Suspends 5 Officials Over Alleged Torture of Prisoners at Attock Jail

Lahore – June 20, 2025: The Punjab Home Department has suspended five prison officials following shocking allegations of torture and mistreatment of inmates at Attock Jail. The decision came after disturbing videos surfaced showing prisoners being subjected to inhumane treatment, prompting public outrage and an immediate inquiry.

According to official sources, the action was taken after a fact-finding committee submitted its preliminary report, confirming gross misconduct and violation of prisoners’ rights inside the facility.

Who Was Suspended?

The suspended individuals include:

  • Superintendent Attock Jail
  • Deputy Superintendent
  • Assistant Superintendent
  • Two Warders

The Punjab Inspector General of Prisons has confirmed the suspensions and stated that a full departmental inquiry is underway to determine accountability and prevent future incidents.

Background of the Incident

The incident came to light after videos and images of tortured inmates went viral on social media, raising serious concerns about custodial abuse. Human rights organizations and civil society groups condemned the act and demanded strict legal action against those responsible.

Punjab’s caretaker Chief Minister and Home Minister took immediate notice and directed swift disciplinary measures, emphasizing zero tolerance for custodial torture.

Government Response

A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department stated:

“The government will not allow any violation of human dignity inside jails. Those responsible will be brought to justice.”

A high-level committee comprising senior prison officials and human rights representatives is continuing investigations. Further legal actions, including criminal proceedings, are likely depending on the outcome of the final report.

Human Rights Perspective

The incident has reignited debate over the state of prison conditions in Pakistan, particularly in Punjab. Activists argue that this is not an isolated incident and reflects deeper structural issues within the prison system, such as lack of oversight, poor training, and absence of accountability mechanisms.
