Hyderabad – July 2, 2025: A man was allegedly killed by his wife’s relatives in Hyderabad after he was suspected of murdering her a day earlier, local police confirmed on Tuesday. The incident has triggered concerns over rising vigilante violence and the need for due legal process.
According to police officials, the man — identified as Rafiq Ali, a resident of the Latifabad area — was attacked by members of his late wife’s family outside his residence, just hours after her mysterious death was reported.
Background: Wife’s Death Under Investigation
The deceased woman, Shabana Bibi, reportedly died under suspicious circumstances on Monday. Her body bore signs of physical assault, prompting her family to accuse Rafiq of domestic abuse and murder.
“The family refused to wait for legal proceedings and took matters into their own hands,” said SHO Latifabad.
An FIR has been lodged against at least three of Shabana’s relatives for their alleged involvement in Rafiq’s death.
Police Response and Legal Action
- Rafiq was declared dead at Civil Hospital Hyderabad
- The murder weapon — a blunt object — was recovered from the scene
- Police have arrested one suspect, while two others are still at large
Law enforcement officials emphasized that no one is above the law and condemned the incident as mob justice, regardless of the motive.
Vigilante Justice and Legal Loopholes
This case adds to a growing list of retaliatory killings in Pakistan where aggrieved families resort to revenge instead of due process, often due to:
- Delays in police investigations
- Low conviction rates in domestic violence and murder cases
- Distrust in the judicial system
Rights groups have repeatedly called for reforms in the criminal justice system to prevent both domestic abuse and extra-judicial acts of violence.
