Karachi has been ranked 170th out of 173 cities in the 2025 Global Liveability Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), placing it among the world’s least liveable cities for another consecutive year.
The report cites low scores in stability, infrastructure, healthcare, and environment as major factors contributing to the city’s poor performance. Karachi received a stability score of just 20, highlighting ongoing challenges with law and order.
Healthcare was rated at 54.2, infrastructure at 51.8, and culture and environment at 35.9. Only education stood out with a relatively better score of 75. Despite minor year-on-year improvements, Karachi has remained in the bottom five cities globally since 2022.
Other cities at the bottom of the list include Dhaka, Tripoli, and Damascus. At the top of the index were Vienna, Copenhagen, and Zurich, which scored above 97 points each.
The EIU’s index evaluates cities based on five categories: stability, healthcare, education, culture and environment, and infrastructure. The rankings are often used by multinational corporations and policymakers to assess quality of life across global urban centres.
Analysts suggest that unless there are substantial reforms in governance and service delivery, Karachi’s position is unlikely to improve significantly in future rankings.
