Karachi Shaken by 36 Mild Quakes in 12 Days as Nationwide Jitters Grow

Karachi, June 12, 2025 — Pakistan’s financial hub, Karachi, has experienced 36 mild earthquakes over the past 12 days, triggering public concern and prompting awareness in other regions of the country . Tremors ranged from 2.0 to 3.6 magnitude, with the strongest being a 3.6 quake that, on one occasion, damaged the Malir Jail wall and led to a security breach.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) attributes the seismic activity primarily to the active Landhi fault line, discharging accumulated tectonic stresses. Chief Meteorologist Ameer Haider expects tremors to “gradually lessen within days,” advising against panic.

Geological experts suggest that the frequent low‑intensity quakes may help prevent any single major event by dissipating energy in stages. However, voices in private research circles warn that an escalation could occur if stress continues to build—though public safety remains manageable, with no widespread damage or casualties reported.

Similar mild tremors have been noted in other parts of Sindh and Karachi suburbs, reflecting a wider seismic wave extending beyond the city’s core. This has triggered renewed discussions about earthquake preparedness—particularly building code enforcement and early-warning systems.

Amid public unease, officials reaffirm that Karachi remains well away from major plate boundaries and a large-magnitude quake is unlikely. Still, urban centers are urged to update structural resilience and strengthen emergency protocols.
