We live in an incessantly polarized world where it’s becoming normal to take the easy way out, posing a neutral opinion on matters that don’t affect us directly.
However, looking the other way on such issues just because they aren’t taking a toll on us yet is not the right mindset to hold on to in the long run. Not to mention, a time always comes when our quietness attacks us at the most helpless of times in one way or another.
That’s why Islam places a duty among all Muslims to stand up with the oppressed and fight for justice together, no matter the circumstances. Moreover, we are to stand firm in our beliefs as we actively pursue and demand peace for all.
As we turn to the Holy Qur’an, we also find several verses highlighting the meaning and importance of upholding justice for ourselves and the ones around us.
Here are 3 verses from the Book of Allah (SWT) defining justice in Islam and guiding us to the right track:
1- Judge with Justice
“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing.” – (An-Nisa: 58)
2- Stand Persistently No Matter What
“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, of what you do, Aware.” – (An-Nisa: 135)
3- Maintain Balance
“And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance, That you not transgress within the balance. And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance.” – (Ar-Rahman: 7-9)
Ultimately, as Muslims, we must remember that everything we do in this life should be for the sake of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. When we stand firm to uphold justice in the name of Allah (SWT) and protect the oppressed, it’s also a way of showing our complete faith and devotion to Him.
