Pakistan and Iran Enhance Pilgrimage Cooperation with Increased Flights and 24/7 Border Access

Tehran, May 28, 2025 — In a significant move to facilitate religious pilgrims, Pakistan and Iran have agreed to increase the number of flights and maintain round-the-clock border operations during the upcoming holy months of Muharram and Arbaeen. This decision was reached during a meeting between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni in Tehran.

Key Agreements:

  • Increased Flight Operations: Both nations will augment the number of flights to accommodate the surge of pilgrims traveling to Iran and onward to Iraq.
  • 24/7 Border Access: The Pakistan-Iran border will remain open 24 hours a day during Muharram and Arbaeen to ensure smooth transit for pilgrims.
  • Pilgrim Support in Mashhad: Iran has committed to providing accommodation and meals for 5,000 Pakistani pilgrims in the city of Mashhad.
  • Hotline Establishment: A dedicated hotline will be set up to promptly address any issues faced by pilgrims during their journey.
  • Trilateral Coordination: A conference involving Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq will be convened in Mashhad to discuss logistical and security arrangements for pilgrims.

Additionally, discussions are underway to explore the feasibility of transporting pilgrims via sea routes, further diversifying travel options.

Beyond pilgrimage facilitation, the two countries have agreed to enhance cooperation in combating illegal immigration, human trafficking, and drug smuggling. Improved border security measures and coordination are also on the agenda to ensure the safety and well-being of travelers.

Minister Naqvi expressed gratitude to the Iranian government for its support and hospitality towards Pakistani pilgrims. He also assured full cooperation regarding the release of Iranian fishermen who inadvertently entered Pakistani waters.

These developments underscore the commitment of both nations to strengthen bilateral ties and ensure the comfort and safety of religious pilgrims during significant observances.
