Pakistan to Present Federal Budget 2025–26 on June 10 Amid IMF Negotiations
The Government of Pakistan has announced that the federal budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 will be presented on June 10, 2025. This marks a delay from the previously scheduled date of June 2, attributed to ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over fiscal targets and economic reforms.
Key Dates
- Pakistan Economic Survey 2024–25: To be released on June 9, 2025.
- Federal Budget Presentation: Scheduled for June 10, 2025.
Adviser to the Finance Minister, Khurram Schehzad, confirmed these dates via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The Federal Budget for FY 2025–26 of Pakistan will be presented on June 10, 2025. The Pakistan Economic Survey 2024–25 will be released a day before the Federal Budget, on June 9, 2025.”
IMF Negotiations and Fiscal Challenges
The postponement of the budget presentation is primarily due to unresolved discussions with the IMF. The government is striving to finalize fiscal targets that align with the IMF’s requirements, which include reducing the fiscal deficit and achieving a primary budget surplus. These measures are crucial for securing continued financial support and ensuring economic stability.
The IMF has emphasized the need for Pakistan to reduce its fiscal deficit from 5.6% of GDP to 5.1% and to maintain a primary surplus of around Rs2.1 trillion. Achieving these targets is vital for improving debt sustainability and fostering economic growth.
Development Budget and Economic Priorities
The upcoming budget is expected to focus on critical areas such as infrastructure development, energy projects, and social sector funding. The government aims to balance fiscal consolidation with the need to stimulate economic growth and provide relief to the public. However, constraints imposed by IMF conditions may limit the scope of development expenditures.
Public Expectations and Economic Outlook
Citizens and businesses are closely monitoring the budget proceedings, anticipating measures that will address inflation, taxation, and public welfare. The government’s ability to navigate IMF negotiations while delivering a budget that meets domestic needs will be pivotal in shaping Pakistan’s economic trajectory for the coming fiscal year.
