Pakistan's Army Chief Declares Water as a 'Red Line', Vows to Protect Rights of 240 Million Citizens

Rawalpindi, May 29, 2025 — Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Pakistan, has emphatically stated that water is a non-negotiable right for Pakistan, labeling it as the nation’s “red line.” Addressing a gathering at the Army Auditorium in Rawalpindi, attended virtually by over 1,800 participants including vice-chancellors, senior faculty, and students from across the country, Munir underscored the critical importance of safeguarding Pakistan’s water resources for its 240 million citizens.

“Water is Pakistan’s red line, and we will not allow any compromise on this basic right of 240 million Pakistanis,” Munir declared, referencing India’s recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

The COAS’s remarks come amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan over water rights and the longstanding IWT. India’s decision to suspend the treaty has been met with strong opposition from Pakistan, which views the move as an attempt to “weaponize water,” threatening the livelihood and sustenance of its population.

Munir also addressed the Kashmir issue, asserting, “There can be no compromise. We will never forget Kashmir, and India must know Pakistan will never abandon it.” He emphasized that Pakistan would never accept Indian hegemony and would continue to stand firm on its principles.

The Army Chief’s statements highlight the increasing concerns over water security in Pakistan. The Indus River system is vital for Pakistan’s agriculture, energy, and drinking water needs. Any disruption in its flow could have severe consequences for the country’s economy and food security.

In response to India’s actions, Pakistani officials have called for diplomatic engagement and adherence to international agreements. The World Bank, a broker of the IWT, has stated that the treaty cannot be unilaterally suspended and emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two nations.

As tensions continue to rise, the international community watches closely, urging both countries to resolve their differences through dialogue and mutual respect for established treaties and agreements.
