PM Shehbaz to Unveil Tariff Reform Policy Aimed at Boosting Industrial Competitiveness
Islamabad, May 29, 2025 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to announce a comprehensive new tariff policy designed to enhance the competitiveness of Pakistan’s industrial sector. Federal Minister for Power and Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, revealed that the policy aims to reduce customs duties, additional customs duties, and regulatory duties on raw materials and semi-finished goods.
The initiative is part of a five-year National Tariff Policy approved earlier this month, which seeks to gradually lower overall tariff protections for select industries. A high-powered steering committee has been established to oversee the implementation of this policy, monitor macroeconomic indicators related to tariffs, and develop strategies to attract foreign investment and boost exports.
Minister Leghari highlighted that the government has already reduced power prices for industries by over 30% in the past year. He also mentioned plans to privatize power distribution companies and shift 27,000 agricultural tube wells in Balochistan to solar power within the next two to three months.
