Lahore, April 7, 2025 – In a major crackdown on illegal meat trade, Punjab authorities have seized 420 kilograms of meat from dead and diseased animals that were set to be sold in markets. The operation, carried out in the Shahdara area of Lahore, led to the arrest of two suspects accused of supplying the tainted meat to local wedding halls and food outlets.
Authorities Take Swift Action
The Mujahid Squad intercepted a vehicle transporting the unfit meat from Farooqabad to Lahore. Upon inspection, authorities found 280 kilograms of beef and 120 kilograms of mutton, all deemed unsuitable for consumption. The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) was immediately notified to oversee the disposal of the meat and take legal action against those responsible.
A Continuous Effort to Combat Illegal Meat Trade
This seizure is part of an ongoing effort by Punjab authorities to crack down on the sale of meat from diseased or dead animals. In past operations, authorities have confiscated large quantities of substandard meat, with several individuals arrested for their involvement in the illegal trade. Last year, another major operation in Lahore led to the confiscation of two tonnes of meat from dead animals.
Health Risks and Public Safety
Meat from diseased or dead animals poses significant health risks, including foodborne illnesses and zoonotic diseases. Authorities have advised consumers to purchase meat only from verified sources and report any suspicious meat sales in their areas.
Punjab’s Commitment to Food Safety
The Punjab Food Authority is intensifying its efforts to maintain food safety standards, conducting regular inspections, raising public awareness, and taking strict actions against violators to protect consumers.
