Federal Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has revealed that Saudi Arabia has deported at least 4,700 Pakistani nationals involved in begging activities. This disclosure highlights the growing issue of organized begging networks tarnishing Pakistan’s international image.

Addressing members of the Pakistan Ready-made Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) in Sialkot, Minister Asif emphasized that approximately 22 million individuals in Pakistan are engaged in begging, collectively earning an estimated Rs42 billion annually. He stressed that the increasing number of beggars is damaging the country’s reputation abroad.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has reported that professional beggars, primarily from South Punjab, Karachi, and Interior Sindh, have been deported from various Middle Eastern countries in recent times. Upon their return, these individuals are placed on the FIA Immigration’s Passport Control List (PCL) to prevent future overseas travel.

Saudi Arabia’s Anti-Begging Regulation imposes strict penalties, including fines and imprisonment, on individuals involved in begging or associated networks. Foreign nationals found guilty may face deportation after serving their sentences.

Minister Asif urged the business community in Sialkot to establish their own bank to promote economic activities and reduce reliance on informal income sources. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing community issues under Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s leadership.
