Ukraine’s SBU Tracks Down and Eliminates FSB Assassins After Daylight Killing of Senior Intelligence Colonel

In a dramatic escalation of the covert war between Kyiv and Moscow, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) announced the successful elimination of two Russian FSB agents suspected of orchestrating the brazen assassination of Colonel Ivan Voronych in a public car park in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district. The attack, captured on CCTV, occurred last Thursday when a masked gunman opened fire with a silenced pistol, striking the senior intelligence officer multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Following a 72-hour intensive manhunt, SBU chief Lieutenant-General Vasyl Malyuk revealed that the suspects—a man and a woman—were cornered in the Kyiv region. They opened fire during an arrest operation and were killed in the ensuing shootout. The agents had reportedly surveilled Col Voronych for days, tracked his movements, and obtained a hidden cache of weapons before executing the daylight ambush.

This operation underscores the intensifying counter-intelligence efforts by Ukraine. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the SBU has grown more assertive in neutralizing enemy operatives on Ukrainian soil. Voronych was a key strategist in high-risk intelligence missions, including sabotage operations linked to the Kursk offensive and deeper strikes inside Russian territory.

While Moscow has not publicly responded to Wednesday night’s operation, pro-Russian outlets were quick to celebrate the original killing of Voronych as a blow to Kyiv’s clandestine capabilities. The SBU has stressed that in cases of FSB aggression, “the only prospect for the enemy on Ukrainian territory is death,” signaling its readiness to strike back decisively.

The incident coincides with a recent surge in Russian attacks, including a record drone barrage and intensified missile strikes. As Kyiv grapples with this uptick in battlefield violence, its intelligence services are simultaneously hunting and eliminating threats in the shadows to safeguard national security.
