On May 24, 2025, social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, experienced a significant global outage that affected users worldwide, including those in Pakistan. The disruption began around 5:36 PM Pakistan Standard Time, with real-time monitoring service Downdetector reporting a peak of 372 outage complaints from Pakistani users.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) acknowledged the widespread disruption but confirmed that the country’s internet infrastructure remained fully operational. In a statement, the PTA clarified that the issue was not due to any technical problems within Pakistan’s internet gateways and that all other internet services across the country were functioning normally.

The root cause of the outage was identified as a data center malfunction in Hillsboro, Oregon, USA. A fire broke out in a battery room at the facility leased by X, leading to extensive damage and service disruptions. Firefighters responded promptly, containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building.

X’s engineering team worked diligently to restore services, addressing issues related to user logins, direct messaging, and notification delivery. By the evening of May 24, services in Pakistan were largely restored, with Downdetector reporting a significant decrease in outage complaints.

In response to the incident, X CEO Elon Musk announced his decision to resume a rigorous work schedule to oversee critical operations across his companies. He emphasized the importance of focusing on X, Tesla, and the upcoming Starship launch, stating, “Back to spending 24/7 at work and sleeping in conference/server/factory rooms.”

This outage marks the second significant disruption for X within a 24-hour period, raising concerns about the platform’s infrastructure and resilience. Users are advised to remain vigilant and report any ongoing issues to the platform’s support channels.
