Peshawar – June 20, 2025: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet has approved the addition of 50 new buses to the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fleet to address increasing ridership and ease public transport congestion in the provincial capital.
The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, where officials emphasized the need to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the flagship Zu Peshawar transport system.
Why the Expansion?
The move comes in response to a surge in passenger volume, with the BRT service now accommodating over 300,000 daily commuters. The system has become a vital urban transit lifeline, particularly for students, professionals, and low-income groups in Peshawar.
Officials from TransPeshawar, the company managing the BRT, stated that the existing fleet is nearing maximum capacity during peak hours, prompting the urgent need for fleet augmentation.
Key Points from the Cabinet Decision
- 50 new hybrid-electric buses to be procured
- Buses to include advanced security, fare collection, and air-conditioning systems
- Expansion aimed at reducing waiting times and overcrowding
- Procurement to follow transparent international bidding standards
According to provincial spokespersons, the new buses will be deployed on high-demand feeder routes and core corridors to optimize traffic flow and commuter convenience.
