Iran Reaffirms Commitment to Nuclear Peace Amid Global Tensions

Tehran – June 26, 2025: Amid escalating regional tensions and increased international scrutiny, Iran has reiterated its continued adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), emphasizing its nuclear program remains strictly peaceful.

The statement was issued by Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani, following rising speculation over Iran’s nuclear ambitions after its missile exchange with Israel earlier this year and reports of increased enrichment activities.

“We Are Committed to Peaceful Nuclear Development” – Tehran

Kanaani strongly rejected allegations suggesting Iran’s intentions to pursue nuclear weapons, stating:

“Iran remains committed to its obligations under the NPT. Our nuclear program is transparent and under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards.”

He added that the Western narrative accusing Iran of weapons pursuit is politically motivated and distracts from real regional threats.

Context: Rising Regional Tensions

The reaffirmation comes in the wake of:

  • Military confrontations between Iran and Israel in April
  • Fresh US sanctions on Iran’s nuclear and missile programs
  • Speculative media reports of Iran’s uranium enrichment nearing weapons-grade levels

Iran’s response aims to signal restraint while maintaining its sovereign right to nuclear technology for energy and medicine.

IAEA Oversight and Diplomacy

Iran continues to allow limited inspections by the IAEA, but access has been restricted since the collapse of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Kanaani reiterated that Iran is ready to resume negotiations if Western powers return to the JCPOA framework and lift economic sanctions.

Criticism of Western Powers

The Iranian official also criticized the double standards of the U.S. and Israel, accusing them of violating international norms:

  • Israel is not a signatory of the NPT
  • The U.S. continues to upgrade its nuclear arsenal while pressuring others

“The world must focus on actual violators of nuclear law, not compliant nations,” Kanaani said.

Global Reaction Expected

While Iran’s stance is consistent with its previous declarations, analysts say the timing of the statement reflects strategic messaging aimed at:

  • Deflecting international pressure
  • Signaling openness to diplomacy
  • Preventing further regional escalation

The coming weeks may see renewed IAEA engagement or diplomatic efforts by Europe and China to revive the nuclear deal framework.
