At least three people were killed and seven others injured when unknown assailants opened fire on a passenger bus in the Surab area of Kalat district, Balochistan, officials confirmed on Friday.
The attack occurred on the RCD Highway, a vital link between Balochistan and Sindh, raising fresh concerns about highway security and targeted violence in the region.
Details of the Incident
- The passenger coach was en route to Karachi from Quetta
- The attackers ambushed the vehicle near Kundi checkpost
- Victims included civilians, with at least one woman among the injured
- Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation
“Initial investigation suggests the incident may be linked to militant activity. All injured were shifted to Surab District Hospital,” said a local administration official.
Security Response and Investigation
Following the attack:
- Levies and Frontier Corps (FC) personnel responded swiftly to the scene
- Forensic teams collected shell casings and eyewitness testimonies
- No group has claimed responsibility so far

This incident follows a string of similar attacks in southern Balochistan, where civilian transport and infrastructure have increasingly come under fire.
Heightened Concerns Over Highway Security
The RCD Highway (N-25), commonly used by both passenger and commercial vehicles, has seen intermittent ambushes over the past year. Security analysts warn that:
- Militants may be targeting inter-provincial mobility
- There is a need for enhanced highway patrolling and checkpost coordination
Human rights activists have urged the government to increase protection for passengers and vulnerable communities traveling through restive areas.
