India's Active COVID-19 Cases Surpass 1,000; Kerala Leads with 430 Infections

As of May 26, 2025, India has reported a significant uptick in active COVID-19 cases, with the total number surpassing 1,000. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare confirmed that the active caseload stands at 1,009, marking a substantial increase from 257 cases reported a week earlier.

State-wise Breakdown:

  • Kerala leads with 430 active cases, a sharp rise from 95 cases on May 19.
  • Maharashtra follows with 209 active cases.
  • Delhi has reported 104 active cases.
  • Gujarat and Karnataka have 83 and 47 active cases, respectively.

Other states like Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and West Bengal have reported fewer active cases, while several states and union territories, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, have reported no active cases at present.

Emerging Variants:

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has identified new subvariants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, in the country. While these variants are under monitoring by the World Health Organization (WHO), they are not currently classified as variants of concern.

Health Ministry’s Response:

The Health Ministry has emphasized that most of the current cases are mild and do not require hospitalization. However, it has urged states to remain vigilant and continue monitoring the situation closely.

Public Advisory:

Health experts advise the public to adhere to COVID-19 appropriate behavior, including wearing masks in crowded places, maintaining hand hygiene, and practicing social distancing. They also recommend getting vaccinated and staying updated with booster doses as per government guidelines.
