Los Angeles, June 10, 2025 — The Trump administration has escalated its immigration crackdown by deploying approximately 700 active-duty Marines, alongside an additional 2,000 National Guard troops, to Los Angeles, signaling a significant federal intervention in response to protests sparked by sweeping immigration raids.
According to U.S. Northern Command, the Marines, based at Twentynine Palms, were placed on “high alert” and dispatched to assist federal personnel in safeguarding property as protests intensified following large-scale arrests—reportedly averaging 2,000 daily under Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s directive.
Tensions Rise with Local Opposition
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have vehemently opposed the deployments, calling them unconstitutional and an unprecedented federal incursion without state consent. The administration is already facing legal challenges under the 10th Amendment, with a lawsuit filed by California officials.
National Guard troops are already present near the Metropolitan Detention Center, where protests have turned confrontational, involving tear gas and baton tactics.
Federal Force & Public Outcry
Critics across the political spectrum, including over 100 military veterans and former senior officers, have warned that using active-duty troops for civil enforcement violates the Posse Comitatus Act and risks undermining democratic norms. Veteran voices caution that this militarized posture echoes actions not seen since the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
Fallout and National Expansion
The deployment has sparked protests beyond California, with solidarity demonstrations erupting in New York, San Francisco, and Austin. Meanwhile, federal officials say they will continue intensifying migrant raids, aiming to detain thousands daily
