Saad Munawar Becomes First Pakistani to Summit Mount Everest via Northern Route
In a historic achievement, Pakistani mountaineer Saad Munawar has become the first Pakistani to summit Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters) from its challenging northern face, which begins in Tibet. This route is less commonly taken due to Chinese restrictions, making Munawar’s feat particularly notable.
Munawar’s ascent was part of an expedition organized by Imagine Nepal. He successfully reached the summit on May 24, 2025, and safely descended back to Camp 3 for the night. His official Facebook account confirmed the accomplishment, stating that he “raised the green flag at the summit of [the] highest peak in the world.”
Prior to this, Munawar had climbed several prominent peaks, including Aconcagua, Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, and Lobuche Peak in Nepal. His leadership in expeditions and mountaineering literature continues to inspire a new generation of climbers in Pakistan.
Karrar Haidri, Secretary of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, congratulated Munawar, stating, “We are immensely proud to share that Saad Bin Munawar has made history as the first and only Pakistani to summit Mount Everest via the challenging North Side route — a feat that places him among the world’s elite mountaineers.”
This accomplishment adds to a series of recent achievements by Pakistani climbers. Earlier this month, Sajid Ali Sadpara summited Dhaulagiri without oxygen or porter support, and Sirbaz Khan successfully summited Mt Kangchenjunga without supplemental oxygen.
